Hives/bumps????

-Hi guys,

Yesterday morning was one of the scariest days so far with our boxer.  I will start by saying before we went to bed she only had one little hive/bump and we thought nothing of it.  For the past few weeks she sleeps with me and my fiancee in our bed.  Last night, I was awoke by her not being able to settle down, so I toke her outside and brought her back in.  Instantly I notice these bumps ALL over and I mean ALL over.  Lately she has been having dry skin and has been scratching, but nothing compares to this kind of scariness!  She was biting at them scratching, whimpering...we didn't know what to do.  I thought she was going to just swell up everywehere and explode?  We decided to go get some benadryl and try that on her, and it made the itchiness go away and she then shortly after fell into a deep sleep for 5-6 hrs.  The bumps went down but not away....oh so scary!  So finally the morning comes and she is awake and she moving fine acting normal, but still had hives all over and we couldn't stand to lok at them any longer...so we took her in th the vet, for a shot and some meds.  Shortly after leaving the vets the hives.....GONE....thank you doc....GEEZ.  Needless to say once we get her home she was zonked out for the rest of the day/night.  This morning she has been all over the place, ate her food like a champ, and is ready to go!  I will subnit photos if requested too, as they are very scary too look at, and I don't know if anyone wants to see them!?

Has anyone ever had this happen to their boxer?  Do you think if I would have just kept giving her benadryl....the bumps would have went away?  We don't have any idea what the deal is:

spider bite
she ate something
we just recently changes fabric softener
just had a 2 inches of snow

We still cant figure out how this may have happened, so we just chalked it up as: we will never know!!!  I gurantee the next time I see the slightest bump/hive....I'm going to make sure to give her some meds!biggrin

SO SO SCARY!

There are two medications that Boxer owners should ALWAYS have on hand... Pepcid AC (or generic equivalent) and Benadryl (or generic). Dogs can have 1- 2 mg of benadryl per pound body weight. An average Benadryl tab is 25 mg.

My rule of thumb with hives, is give a relatively high dose of benadryl, around 2 mg per pound, then continue with benadryl every 12 hours at the lower dose, often for up to 3 days. You must be vigilant about swelling around the face, and difficulty breathing. Either of these require a trip to the vet. Also, if the benadryl does not seem to be working or the dogs' symptoms worsen, then a trip to the vet right away. Boxers and hives are a very common combination. They seem to be allergic to lots of things, spiders, mosquitos, pollen, molds, etc.

Pepcid AC (famotadine) is for tummy upset (non diarrhea). Give 10 mg (1 tab usually) about 20 minutes before a meal to control queasy tummy, gurgly tummy, etc.

Benedryl is a staple in my medicine cabinet. Boxers are so sensitive to many things but usually on a temporary basis :) Obviously bee stings are another creature that requires extra care.

Pepcid AC was a more recent discovery for me as well. When Booker T was fighting his cancer, it was suggested to help him. I have used it ever since. It really works great with the dogs and even for myself :)

So I just noticed a bump on Bowser's hip...at first I thought it was the top of his hip bone sticking out and I freaked, but then I felt it and it definately feels like a cyst or bump of some sort.  His eyes have been looking a little swollen the last day or so (just barely) and they are a little runny.  Does this mean it's just allergies and not anything to worry about.  I already have my phone ready to dial the vet first thing Monday morning...I was just freaked about the bump, because I've read how prevalent cancer is in boxers.  He does bite and scratch at this spot all the time, but it didn't swell up till today.  He just got neutered last week, so at first I thought maybe they gave him a shot in that area...nothing else has really changed around him except our weather going from one extreme to another.  What do you think?  Call the vet or wait and see?  I have benedryl AND pepcid..for myself and my kids, but it's good to know I can use both for my fur baby too! :)

Since it just popped up, I wouldn't worry too much. If it continues to grow, stays more than 2 weeks, or changes in any way, then definitely have it looked at.

Ok, so in this harsh light of the post-Super Bowl Monday, it looks like it's actually going down a little, so I will wait it out.  He's still biting at it though...maybe i'll try a little itch cream on it for him or something.  Thanks! :)

My husband and I have a boxer and she has always had skin sensitive issues like hives or whatever..but recently she started getting these big blisters ALL over her body!! The vet doesnt even know what it could be. We've tried the ol process of elimination with laundry detergent, dog food, everything! Still we dont know what is going on..We have to take her to the vet tomorrow because meds are not working so they want to do a biopsy on her.  I'm replying to you because the story sounds so familiar and I want you to please keep my dog in your prayers that there is nothing cancerous going on..thanks for making me feel like I am not the only one out there :)

Pepcid is also a histamine blocker. The Benedryl and Pepcid act on different histamine receptors main reason for the meds not just belly issues but helps. Always seek medical advice from a vet. (I am not a vet). Good to know your drugs from a resource such as drugs.com

Bumps/hives just showed up on my boxer this morning. Our vet recommended children's benadryl since she is still a puppy. We gave her 2 tsp about 7 hours ago and nothing has happened yet. She has been outside lots lately and Mosquitos are terrible here but she hasn't been outside for the last couple days because it's been raining so I have no idea they showed up all of a sudden. Any suggestions. How did all your dogs end up doing?

We are still fighting with hives on our 10 month old boxer pup. It started about a month ago. A trip to the emergency, benadryl and a steroid shot, plus benadryl for 3 days...a week later it started again. A trip to our vet, same treatment and a week later again but not as severe. He seems to be fine but we cannot figure it out. We have checked everything. Maybe his food. He has a sensitive stmach and when he was born, the breeder had him on the lwest Nutro. Of course, I slowly introduced the Nutro Holistic for large breen puppy and this was fine for 6 months. Our Vet has him on Purina EN. His stomach is fine but now the hives. Thinking about Nutro natural Choice. A woman told me this was great food for dogs, we were both at the mergency vet one night. Cypress doesn't seem to itch but it is hard not to feel bad for him when you pet him and can feel all the weird bumps. The Vet has given up but I won't until his soft silky coat is back. ThanksQ

Please !!!   I would suggest that anyone that has a dog that has hives to have their vet to asperate one of the bumps, a very, very fine needle  is used and the smear can be put on a slide and the vet uses a stain to see if Mast Cells are present Right in the Office, not a painful or expensive test.

I would like to talk to others that are experienceing  or have experienced Mast Cell Tumors with your dog.

There can be so many causes for Hives. Remember, hives are not really the problem. They are the result of something wrong with your dog. It could be a bug bite or an allergy. It could be something they ingested.

Try Benedryl first. If that does not work, I suggest  a trip to the vet.

i have an 8 mnth old puppy her name is mia and 2 days ago i noticed that she had a few hives around her nose and mouth area so i looked on the intrenet and called the vet and they all said benadryl so i tried and it seemed to work then got worse and her eyes swell up really bad, so we took her too the vet here and the guy looked at her eye and decided that she needed drops for her one eye and not the other.   then almost right after i left there i noticed that her throat was swelling up so i called him back and they said that i should give her benadryl so i did.  now we are here and it seems like her hives on her face are getting better but it also seems they are spredding. i hate to see her not as herself but she seems like she wants to play and she eats, drinks, goes to the bathroom good. the hives have not spread anywhere besides her face.  she keeps looking at me like help me and i dont know what to do. the only thing that scares me is her throat is swollen still and it hasnt gone down for a day now.   looking like i am going to have to take her back to the vet.  please give your opinion???

Oh yes...i had this happen to my Boxer sometime last night.  Didn't notice any bumps until we woke up this morning.  After a vet visit, shot and some antihistimines she's okay now.  Very scary since i recently lost my 15 month old Boxer to an allergic/drug interaction.  She was very scary to look at and i felt so bad because she was miserable.  We also have no idea what caused this.

Oh my gosh!!!  our boxer is currently going through a similar situation - terrible terrible hives!!!  Had to take her to emergency vet and she was given a steriod injection and we were instructed to keep her on benadryl 50 mg. every 8 hours.  We did so . . . following day the hives covered her entire body (poor baby) - back to ER vet (as this all happened on a weekend when our vet was closed).  They gave her another injection, placed her on steroids, antibiotics, benadryl, and even provided us with a spray for her irritated skin.  also took her off her dog food and are feeding her chicken and rice - we are finally seeing good results, but still medicated and need to re-incorporate doggie food.

It sounds like something she either ate or perhaps had a very bad reaction to. Spider bites can do that. One of my girls got bit by a spider and it took 2 days of Benedryl for the hives to stop appearing.

Boxers are just so sensitive to insect bites and allergies. Always have Benedryl on hand :)

thank you for your input . . . this is our first boxer and we just love her.  actually read a post about acorns?  well my red oak tree is producing acorns, sure wonder if she got one that fell off the tree.  This weekend we begin reducing her meds and introducing her food . . . so far so good! Enjoy your weekend and thanks to all who provide information for boxers for those of us that are new to these lovable babies!!!!!

I don't know about Boxers being allergic to acorns. I suppose anything is possible but that would not be something I would think would typically cause an allergic reaction.

My 2 1/2 month old boxer pup must have either gotten a big bite or something in the back yard. He usually just does his potty and comesnright babk inside, so no prolonged stays out there. I saw the hives in the morning when he went out to potty. I was like what the heck. Then when he came inside he started acting weird in his crate and jumping up and down. I didn't know what to do, luckily it was about 7am and I called the vet. They have him a shot of Benadryl and told me to keep him on it for two days Twice a day. I also took pictures.  We live in a wooded area so I think it was a spider bite. Damn spiders, they have gotten me a few times too while sleeping. I may have to call the Pest control company to come monthly.

Boxers are very sensitive to bug bites. Benedryl every 4-6 hours will keep it under control usually. And yes, keep it up for 2 days. Even if the swelling goes down in 24 hours, keep giving it at least for 48 hours.

Hoping for a good outcome :)

My 4 year old boxer has had allergies all her life and has been tested to show what she is allergic to. We are very careful to keep known allergens out the house and to a minimum but over last 2 weeks she has had lots of episodes of hives when she goes outside. She can pop out in the garden for 30 seconds and come back in covered in them, all over her back and tummy. She is incredibly itchy and sore, but otherwise fine in herself. She has been on piriton for a week which seems to help calm the reaction but not clear it but had to rush her to the vets today for emergency steriod injection as the latest attack compromised her breathing. I cannot work out what causes these reactions to happen so quickly as soon as she goes outside. Could it be going from hot to cold that wakes up the reaction? I haven't tried benedryl so will def give this a go! Any help or advice would be wonderful

Benedryl can be a life saver for a Boxer. Try giving her 1 about 10 minutes or so before she goes outside. See if it lessens the reaction. The capsules are not very fact acting but they usually help.

Everyone is allergic to different types of things. And dogs are the same. What may make one react badly won't even affect another. When it comes to Boxers, you always want to keep some Benedryl in the house.

I am new to the group, so hello fellow Boxer lovers! My husband and I have four Boxers...Rocco(8), Bella(7), Bianca(6) and Bruno(2). They are the loves of our lives.

About two years ago, our oldest girl Bella (who has countless allergies) started developing permanent hives/bumps on the upper part of each of her front legs. This started happening right around the time that we went away from Prey Model Raw feeding (for financial reasons only). I honestly can't say for sure if I first noticed them prior to discontinuing raw feeding, or if that is just my mental time-marker. We've gone through endless food trials and they never seem to get worse or better, or change in any way. She was eating a dehydrated, jerky version of raw by a company called ZiwiPeak. The food is comprised of dehydrated meat, bones, organs and supplements. It is not only grain-free, but it is 100% carbohydrate-free. We thought for sure the hives would disappear after a few months of eating pseudo-raw, but this did not prove to be the case. She's been to two specialists and they have done several biopsies. They are not cancer, thank goodness, but no one can figure out what they are. She has also seen a wonderful holistic vet who was, like all of the other vets, awestruck by the mystery of these hives. As a side note, they do not bother her at all. She never scratches or bites at them, or rubs herself on furniture (to relieve any discomfort that they may be causing). You can touch them, poke them and pinch them and she won't bat an eyelash. Over the last couple of months, however, they have started to increase in size and spread to other areas of her body. She now has hives on her back legs as well. Another side note, Benadryl does nothing for them.

Here's where it gets really interesting...

Our oldest, Rocco, has them in the exact same area of his upper front legs. I noticed them about six months ago. He doesn't have nearly the volume of them, nor are they as big, but they are definitely there. And now Bianca has them as well. She began developing them about three months ago. First in the [now] classic front leg area, but she also has them on the sides of her back, her hind legs, and the top of her head. Again, none of the bumps seem to bother any of the dogs. Our youngest, Bruno, who is just shy of two years old, has what appears to be tiny versions of them developing on his front legs. Not sure if this is paranoia on my part because I am certainly looking for them, but common sense at this point tells me that it is not.

For those of you that are all-too-familiar with grass allergies, we have artificial turf for this very reason. We've had turf for more than five years...three years in this house (from the time we moved in) and two+ years in the previous house. We used different turf companies at each house, and after doing some reading on the internet, I am starting to wonder about the turf itself. Not only does turf hold onto bacteria far longer than natural landscaping, the infill that is used is toxic (rubber, silica), and it is possible for particles to become airborne. Could this be the cause? Another thought is this...the previous owners of this house had cats. What we did not realize until the papers had been signed was that their cats peed everywhere <sigh>. While we did rip up ALL of the flooring and install new carpet and tile, is it possible that allergies to cats are still wreaking havoc? Because Bella is highly allergic...a 4 on the allergen scale (0-4).

Thoughts/comments/expertise? I look forward to any feedback you may have. And thank you for taking the time to read my novel!

The enclosed pic is from Bella's upper leg. The area measures approx. 4" long by 2" wide.

Welcome !

Boxers are so sensitive with their skin. Usually what upsets one does not upset another. However since all of yours are having the same problem, and it is where they lay down, it would make since to be suspicious of the outside environment as well as the inside environment.

Make sure you have not put any pesticides down where the dogs can lay on top of it. And you can use Benedryl to help with the hives.

Boxers can easily get allergies easily. If you have hot dry weather and pollen in the air, that may be part of the problem.

The same thing has happened to my little girl, the vet told me to keep giving her the Benadryl and the hives did end up going away. My female boxer breaks out wayyyy more often then my male does. It is extremely scary when it happens. Anything and everything makes her break out, boxers are very sensitive.

I know this was a while ago, but I'm thinking your boxer might be suffering from a flea allergy. Even if your dog is on a monthly flea preventative, just one bite can cause an allergic reaction. I wrote this article explaining how flea allergies can seem like skin problems. I hope it helps!

This happened to my boxer yesterday? I wasn't there yesterday but my partner thought she was going to die and rushed her to the vet. I didn't see any pics he didn't get any was that worried about getting her to a vet. We thought a bite or food may have caused this!

Is your Boxer okay now??    When your Boxers breaks out in Hives, it never hurts to take them to a vet. That way they can get an intervenience injection to jump start stopping the reaction. However if you are home when this starts, you can give 2 quick Benedryl pills and then keep an eye on your Boxer. It is slower to stop the reaction, but for most common bites are issues, it will still be effective. The key is to keep a steady eye on your Boxers during this treatment time.

I have attached a photo for a severe reaction to a bee sting in the muzzle of my female Boxer. This was several years ago and I was able to start her Benedryl treatment quickly. But she still continued to swell up a bit until it took effect. I kept an eye out for her breathing and thankfully she got b

etter.
