update on Emma
Permalink

Hey Everyone,
It has been a while since I last posted. So much to tell. Last I posted, I was battling the couple pussy bumps on Emma's back. The bumps pretty much cleared up on their on but a couple of weeks ago she started losing hair on her right hip. Personally, I didnt overreact. Again, I am parent that thinks that if it isnt bothering you, why bother about it. I figured she layed in the dirt or sun too long or..you know boxers, they have weird skin disorders. They have allergies and the allergies here in CA have been really bad this spring.
My hubby was the worrier. after three weeks of his taunting that she might have cancer, I took her in today to the vet.
I have to first say, I love my vet. You dont hear that too often. I dont know if it is the fact that he owns boxers (three currently), lets my dog lick his face, or his soft voice..but I love him.
The bumps were infected hair follicals.  He said to tell hubby in the future to leave them alone and they will heal faster. DUH.
The hair loss he pegged right away. He ran many test to rule out any other concern (fungal will take a coupple weeks to get the results but she doesnt have symptions for that). She is suffering from Seasonable Flank Alopecia.  Which he said she has seen a lot of in our area lately. Anyone else heard of this or had this happen? The treatment..nothing. It will hopefully take care of itself in a month or so and may reoccur next year.
Other than that, Emma is great. She doesnt know she is bald on one hip, nor does it bother her.
For hubby, $100 bucks well spent.

Melatonin can sometimes help with seasonal flank alopecia.  With a boxer I would do 6mg 2 to 3 times a day.  You may want to talk to you vet about it.  It's good to hear that she is doing well, and I understand your husband's need to pick LOL

I am glad that this was nothing serious. This site gives you an overview of the problem.

Yep, the old seasonal flank alopecia (hair loss). I swear, any exotic sounding thing out there, our boxer kids are sure to get!!! ;(
As mentioned by Doc, melatonin can help. I think the alopecia has somethin gto do with the lack of sunlight during the winter months.

Have never dealt with it but have heard about it over the years. Common in many Boxers. Does not seem to cause any true problems, but definitely keep an eye for any things that truly look strange.

Another thing that might not be a bad idea is to have her thyroid checked by your vet. Unless they already did that :)

Thanks for all the responses...
Bender0069...Vet did tell me about the melatonin but said that it isnt a cure and if it isnt bothering her then why bother with the injections (apparently the oral dose inst as effective).
Pawprint...He did mention the whole thyroid issue. She isnt showing any of the signs for it (overweight, lazy, sleeps alot, etc)...He wants to wait a couple of months, recheck her weight to see if she is gaining weight and then reevaluate checking thyroid.
Fortunately for us, the area that she is losing hair has skin under that is the same color as her hair. You would not notice the hair loss unless I mentioned it.
Oh..Boxersue, you mentioned lack of sun in the winter months. It would be the case but for us on the west  coast, it is sunny all the time. Before the diagnosis, I thought it might have been a side effect from her 'sunning' herself in the backyard. She loves to sunbath. I thought it might have been the weird fluctuations in weather though. It has been either hot and sunny or very cold and sunny. I have both summer and winter plants blooming. My garden doesnt know how to respond.

Even though my Emma is going bald like her daddy, I still think she is the cutest boxer.
I have to tell you, my ten year old son was sick all weekend with the stomach flu and Emma would not leave his. She laid on his bed or the couch with her head on his leg. It was so cute. Normally she just tollerates him but this was love.
