How much exercise is enough?

I have been planning on adopting a boxer for quite awhile and have been waiting for right time in my life when I have the time, energy and finances to devote to a dog. In the mean time I've been reading every printed word I can find on the boxer breed, dogs in general, behavior, training, etc...I know that boxers are a high energy breed and require a considerable amount of exercise. My question is how much exercise is enough? I jog between 2 and 3 miles each morning and am essentially looking for the dog to be a jogging partner. I also plan on taking the dog for an evening walk (or 2), and of course trips to the park to play. I work relatively long hours, I'll be out of the house from 9:30 to 6:30, Monday through Friday. Would this be enough exercise to keep the dog from going crazy while I'm at work? I'd hate to have to keep the dog crated all day but I also don't want the dog to destroy my house because it has too much excess energy. I know a lot of this varies from dog to dog, and I do plan on adopting a young adult dog (18 months - 3 years) so I'll be able to see what I'm getting before I adopt. I just want to be sure that a boxer is the right fit for my life. As much as I adore the breed, I want to adopt a dog that will mesh with my lifestyle.

Boxers need exercise, this is true. And some make good running partners. Others do not. Boxers are more of a sprinting breed than a long distance breed. And with the heart issues in Boxers, you need to be careful. I have a friend that jog/walks 5 miles a day with her Boxers. As long as it is not warm out. She does not keep it at a steady run. LOL----and I have not run 5 miles straight since high school smile.gif

I used to take my Boxers out for a 1 mile jog once a day, and that worked great. They were tired when we got home and that worked well for me :)

It is true that Boxers have a lot of energy... but they are not insane with energy like some other breeds, JRT's and Lab pups come to mind.  FOr most Boxers a morning jog, and an evening walk or two would be a good amount of exercise (assuming they have no heart problems).  I would worry more about the dog being alone for the entire day.  Boxers are very people oriented.  Any chance there is a doggy daycare near you?  Or perhaps a dog walker that could pop in to interact with the dog halfway through the day?  I htink the amount of exercise you are proposing would suit most boxers just fine... but a little more interaction during the day, either with humans or other dogs would be even better, especially if the dog is still quite young or has seperation anxiety.

We have two boxers, we take them for a 45 min., fast walk in the morning, and then they get an hour walk in the evening....between times, they play with each other and run around our yard.

Both my husband and I are at home, he works out of his home office, and I don't work, so they are with me a great deal of time.

To avoid your future boxer from being crated for long hours, would you be able to have a dog walker come around noon, and take him or her for a walk?

That might be something to think about.
