I stumbled across this forum (seeing as how I love boxers, and recently lost mine to surgery complications) and was wanting some input about getting my new puppy.

I currently own a female, spayed Boerboel. She's approximately seven months old (and such a big girl!) and we've never had problems with her being aggressive towards other people, dogs, cats, etc... And she doesn't have much of a prey drive at all, it seems, she's just a big laidback girl.

For my birthday, I have discovered (shh...) that my husband is buying me an English bulldog (puppy i'm assuming). He's been having people ask if I would rather have a female like my boxer or a male. I'm an experienced dog owner, but I am still concerned over whether getting a female would cause tensions between her and my Boerboel? Or should I get a male? Regardless the new puppy will be fixed.

I understand that the puppy will need to be supervised with my 100+ pound girl, but overall do you think they will get along?

Hello and welcome. It seems most boxers have room in their big hearts for all other people and dogs but please be forewarned. In my experience the worst cases of dog against dog aggression have occurred between two females regardless of breed. I know some animal shelters even refuse to adopt out female dogs to a household which already owns a female for exactly this reason. It would probably be wise to bring home a male(even better if it is a pup) bulldog to give you the best shot at developing a good relationship between your dogs, and keeping peace in the household as a whole

Thank you CodyBear! And sorry, I must have misprinted, but my female is a Boerboel. My female boxer is the one who passed away. :( I believe you might be correct about getting a male, to cut down tensions between the two. I've experienced aggression between same-sex dogs in the same household as well, but never with such a size difference as here. Usually the dogs adjust, but I don't want to risk anything.
