I don't leave my Dogs in the yard when I am not at home.
They are left inside in their Kennels or crates.
If you are leaving Duke in the back yard, I would suggest putting up a Covered Kennel run with a shelter inside of it so that he will remain inside of this structure and safe.

I have to agree, my boys are never left in the yard when we are not home, as a matter of fact, when they are out, one of us is always watching them. IMO, you are only asking for trouble if you leave dogs outside alone, and especially when you are not home. There are many things that could happen. You want to know how to keep him safe, keep him in the house, crate train him, or as Beverly suggested, build a covered dog run, with a shelter. But my suggestion is, in the house, crated if you can't trust him. Boxers are not meant to be kept outside, espeically in hot or cold weather. They do not have an undercoat to keep them warm and they can not handle hot weather because of their short muzzle.

Is Duke neutered.??

BTW..Duke is a handsome fella...:) please keep him safe ..in the house.

Make sure Duke is neutered. He could be answering animal urges to breed a female in heat somewhere in your neighborhood. Even a neutered dog may try to wander, but the pull is extra strong for an intact dog.

Make sure you are giving Duke a ton of exercise when you are home with him. I do not know how long you leave him unattended, but perhaps even taking him for a long walk before leaving your house would be something you need to do. Clearly he has extra energy he needs to burn off.

If you have the ability to put in a covered dog run, I echo this earlier suggestion. However you still need to give alot of exercise to Duke when you are with him. It sounds like this is a very energetic boy :)

Thank you everybody for your opinions. We ended up adding a trellis (sp?) to the top of the fence so now its about 9 ft tall. He hasn't gotten out since then. I do give him a bunch of excercise and take him with me everywhere i can.

Thanks again!

Good thinking. Make sure it is securely attached to your fence top. LOL--hubby did that one as well when we got our first Boxer. Sometimes even the holes confuse them from trying to scale the newer height. LOL--you never know with Boxers.

But remember he knows he can get over a fence, so keep your eyes on him. An old time breeder told me about her Boxer that could scale fences over 10 feet tall. Obviously he was part Spiderman :)
