My boy is a LICKER! He has defeated the e-collar! Initially we did not leave the vets office with one. We were going to play it by ear. Ok. We definately needed one. So, we go to pick it up, the tech slides it on, & Frazier starts bucking like a wild bull at the rodeo until it came off He adjusted to it once we made it home thank goodness. He realized that this device keeps him from reaching his incision while laying down or standing- sooooooo...he figured out that if he sits on the recliner & bends just enough that he can spread em & lick ALL he wants! Smarty pants. I have found that a large t-shirt works better than the e-collar during the day & is a little more comfy, but not on the recliner :).
Forgive me for all the emoticons, but I am cheezin through this whole story. Other than keeping him from licking, he seems to be doing well. But it is definately hard to keep him relaxed.
That is just too funny! I can just picture him! they sure can amaze you on how they figure out things don't they? The t shirt is a good idea. Good luck keeping him down. I honestly tried my best with Daisy and I think I only made it 4 -5 days and figured that was the best I could do. I did put most of her toys up and did get her a few bully sticks. They helped a lot. So did the kong!
Hey, a Boys gotta do what a Boys gotta do!! The T-Shirt is definitely a good idea. good Luck!!!

Not too hard to outsmart us hooomans!!!! Mr Frazier is definitely a smarty pants!!! Just watch his incision for any swelling redness or oozing. You could also try some of the apple bitter bitter ointment, but in my experience it gets everywhere and you end up eating just as much of it... not pleasant!!! All you can do is try...

**Boxers... not just dogs, they're an adventure!
When Voodoo had her surgery she was very depressed afterward, I thought it was due to pain. The next day I took her elizabethan collar off and she immediately turned into her normal self (jumping up and down and happy) - it was the darn collar!
I immediately called the hospital and insisted they sell me a "No Bite" collar. It sort of looks like a cervical collar - in that it is really wide/high - it prevents them from being able to bend their neck to allow them to reach the incision.
It saved Voodoo's sanity! She doesn't mind it in the least - happy to wear it for the rest of her life.
I looked into that one a few weeks before his surgery. It had GREAT reviews. But, I wasen't sure he was going to need a collar at all so I didn't go for it. Looking back, I should have just bought it and sent it back if we didn't need it. He does get a little quiet when I put on the collar, & won't eat or drink, but it's kinda good b/c he is more calm this way. He is definately ready to play and be Frazier again though. Can't wait til he can take off and run! :)
The one thing about E-collars and others is that you can always use them later. I save all my special vet collars for the future. Either for new puppies getting ears cropped or mature dogs needing surgery. The vet collars always come in handy at some point down the road.
