Leaving him out of the crate
Permalink

Good Morning!
I am pondering starting to leave Frazier out of the crate when we leave the house.  What are thoughts on this?  I know people who do and have always left their dogs to the whole house when they leave and some who do the opposite. I'm sure its kind of case by case.
He doesn't mind his crate, and had proven himself when gated to the kitchen...but is there a certain time when dogs can be left to the whole house?
What do you guys do?

I Ithink it is a personal preference and an issue of trust and at times safety....
Denee and Pilot are crated, Zammi is not.
He is 7 years old and stays on the living room level with access to the Doggie Door.
Because I am retired, my dogs are very rarely left crated for more than 5-6 hours at the max.

It all depends on the dogs, actually. I am able to leave my dogs in my house for hours at a time. Though they do have access to a doggy door always. But this was a priviledge each had to earn over time. I will do test trips and leave a youngster out for an hour. Do that a couple of time and praise them up if nothing is destroyed. Then I will gradually increase the time.

I have mature trained dogs that help train the youngsters. But ever dog is different and some can be trusted more than others :)

I did not crate Bacci. I tried at the beginning but she had severe anxiety when left in the crate. I just started leaving her out a little bit at a time 10 min, then 20 min, then 1/2 hr, then an hour. She never did a thing. I think she was about 4 months old. She was such a good girl! Daisy on the other hand is the exact opposite. I don't think I will ever be able to leave her out (haha)!!! Maybe when she is older but definetly not now! She does not mind being crated at all and as I work part time, she is very rarely crated over 3-4 hours.
