Welcome Ashley. This is very common with Boxers. The B in Boxers is for Bouncy. That is what I tell everyone because it is true :)

It sounds like you need to start taking some obedience classes with your boy. Butch is going to get bigger and the problem will get worse. An obedience class will help teach you how to train him better and of course help train him in general. You have to have some amount of control over him if you want to then be able to direct him when company comes.

Boxers love people. Boxers love company. The believe everyone that walks in your door is there to see them and them alone. It is kind of hard wired into them :)

Hi Ashley......you have a very typical Boxer Boy.
The cost of Obedience Training Classes may vary depending upon the area of the Country you are in and the Place that is teaching the Class.  Here in COS an 8 week Class for Beginner Obedience generally runs around $120. This is at a Training Center that specializes in all of the Performance Venues and also Conformation Training.
You could ask your Vet to give you some references for Training Facilities in your area.
Lots of luck with your young Boy!

Boxers are basically a one person animal.  That is to say, they bond closer to one person more than the others.  They are especially great with kids.

I had the same problem with my 3 year old.  Took him to a couple of classes.  He was 6 months old the first time.  Only took him once, because my vet wasn't real pleased with the training I told him about and the trainer compared  boxers to pitbulls(?)!  So, that concerned me.

You might also go line to "The Dog Whisperer"  I watched him on DTV, he works with dogs with all kinds of issues and has a pack of "40" at his place.

The one thing I have learned from trainer is that you have to establish yourself as the "Alfa" dog.  Yep, that's right, leader of the pack.

If you have him trained to sit, tell him to sit (don't yell, doesn't work) use your best deep voice, step between him and the person entering the house.  Ask them not to speak to him, but to turn their backs on him.    Don't let him out of the position, when they turn around, keep telling him to sit, stay.   Don't tell him "Good Boy" right away.  You might want to keep treats in a pocket or by the door to help with this.

My boy has calmed down, but it took some growing up.   Do take him to training, especially to socialize him with other dogs.  Something I failed to do. I think, private lessons first.

Just suggestions.

If you haven' t done OB training, you should; it is a good way to bond with your dog, get him socialized and get some control over his behavior.  I just signed Dharma up for a 5 week class for $55. Anyway, one thing you might want to try is this: put him on a leash and tie it off to an anchor. Make sure that he can see the visitors, but also make sure to ignore him until he calms down, at which point he can be let off the leash. This might sound mean, but it won't hurt him and it should teach him to be more calm around visitors. For the jumping, try turning away while taking his paws off of you. DO NOT push him off, as he will probably think you are playing with him. After you do this, ignore him; don't look at him, don't talk to him, don't do anything (unless he jumps again) until he calms down. This won't make him a more sedate dog, but it will teach him what are inappropriate greeting behaviors.

Hi Ashley.....
We have a 4 1/2 month old boxer boy named Stevie, who is a major jumping bean, he is currently in *puppy kindergarten* and I plan on taking him through a lot of OB training, he's going to be a big strong boy, who needs to have manners...he's almost knocked me down a few times....when my back was turned, and he decided he wanted to play with me...LOL

As far as the jumping when people come over..... for right now, we leash him....have our guests ignore him, when they first walk into the house..... until he settles down a bit, and gets used to the fact that there are MORE people to play with, once he is a bit calmer, we unleash him, everybody joins in on giving him the sit command, with a treat and a lot of praise...he will work for food!

Obviously, he is work in progress, but this is how we handle it, again... for now...

He does respond to sit and off command....but, when new people come in he *forgets*.....to put it mildly....
So, we always have a leash near by just incase...
