I have received 2 calls in the last 2 days because of dogs stung/bitten by bees or wasps. So, just some guidelines of how you can treat these at home.
1. Give benadryl right away. 1 - 2 mg per pound of body weight. A standard benadryl tablet is 25 mg. Dose can be repeated every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
2. Ice the area to help control pain and swelling.
3. Monitor the dog closely. Any signs of breathing difficulties head to the vet immediately! This is most common when a dog is stung on the face or throat, but can occur with any sting/bite anywhere.
Typically the pain of the sting/bite will last 1-2 hours so pain control really isn't necessary. Severe swelling, hives, etc., that don't respond to the benadryl treatment will require treatment by a veterinarian. Never assume a couple of benadryl tabs will be all your dog needs.. Most often, benadryl treatment for up to 48 hours is all that is required. However, you can never assume this will be all your dog needs. Monitoring post sting/bite is very important, as the symptoms of reaction can build over time.
As always, if you are unsure, call your vet!!!
