Hi hunter is about 2 years old and he is not a skinny dog but i want him to gain a little more weight his ribs are kinda showing and his hips. Whats a good amount for me to feed him and how many times a day. he is about 65 to 70 pounds.
What are you feeding him and in what amounts? A lot depends upon the Type of food and his activity level. Is he neutered or is he a whole male?

I got him as a puppy i never neutered him but his testicles never dropped the vet said to leave it alone if its not effecting him because the surgery is complicated. I have tried different types of food like Beneful, Pedigree, Iams, And i was normally just filling up his bowl and leaving it there he would eat some leave the bowl would be there for maybe a day or 2. I know its wrong that's why i want to know a better schedule to follow. Thanks
Suggestion...................If his Testicles did not drop, he really should have been neutered. The procedure is a bit more complicated than a regular neutering, but not more ocmplicated than spaying. I would stick to one type of quality food and feed twice a day. Once in the a.m. and once in the p.m. This is a healthier way for a dog to eat. Feed the proscribed amount, measured, and see what his weight is after a couple of weeks. You can then either add or subtract from the amount fed

65-70 lbs sounds like a good weight for a medium sized Boxer. Remember, you want them to be a bit more on the lean side than heavy. It is better for their joints and for their heart :) Beverly is correct about neutering. It really is something you need to consider. There is always a chance his retained testicles could cause trouble later. I am surprised a vet would suggest leaving them. At this point, they are a foreign body in the abdominal cavity. That is, if he really even has testicles.
I would think an ultrasound could tell you for sure?

Yeah i took him to the vet today and the vet tried feeling around his stomach and could not find his testicles anywhere maybe he never developed them? And the vet never suggested on doing anything different. But you guys made a good point i need to find out if his testicles are in there and if they are is okay to be removed but if they are even take a sperm count to check and see if its good because i would like to get a puppy from him before neutering.
Oh and i was also reading online and i came across these Satin Ball treats that im considering on making him. Says it should put weight on a dog in a couple of days. And i will also change the feeding time to once in the AM and PM with the right amount. I consider Hunter to be a Large Boxer his Dad was big and perfect weight hunter just needs to gain about 5 pounds to be perfect Cover his ribs and stuff.

Hunter should never be bred. It is a hereditary genetic flaw for a dog to not have 2 descended testicles. The last think you ever want to do is breed a dog with such a genetic problem.
Now, I seriously doubt he has any semen count. The testicles, if they exist, would immature and malformed. Only when they drop into the sac do they start to grow and develop into mature testies. If any semen was being produced by retained testicles, they would be immediately killed because of the core temperature of your dog. Ever hear about human males whom are warned to wear boxer shorts instead of briefs to cool their testies for better sperm production? Same principle applies.
So, if the only reason you have decided not to neuter Hunter was to have a puppy, I suggest that no longer be on the table for consideration. Besides I don't think it is possible, it really is not what is best for him or any possible puppies produced by him.
Just love him for being the sweet boy he is :)
