How old where your dogs when they got there first shots? With my three dogs my vet would not do there first shots until they were 8 weeks old. When Sierra had her puppies he wouldnt do them early he said 8 weeks. I called around and only one vet would do them earlier then 8 weeks he would do them at 7 weeks. I waited untill 8 weeks... But why do some vets do them earlier? How old should a puppy be when it gets it first shots? Is it good to get them early or should you wait till 8 weeks?

Well, now you guyz got me worried! My girl has already had her 2nd set of shots, I believe & she's yet to reach 8 weeks -- she'll be 7 weeks on March 5th. *gulps* Is this good or bad? It sounds to me like the shots are pointless before this time. Is this true? Should I get my Vet's opinion (after she arrives, of course)?

This was one of the reasons I was asking. Because I saw in your other post that Prada all ready had her second set of shots. When I got Sierra she was not 8 weeks old yet and they said she had her first set of shots at 5 weeks... I thought that was odd so I asked my vet when I took her in at 8 weeks and he said that set would not count. He told me 8 is when they are suppose to get there first shots and no later then 10 weeks. But I see it all the time in the adds for puppies for sale that say they have there first and sometimes second set of shots before they are 8 weeks... That is why I wanted to bring it up. It could be mis leading to people that the puppy they bring home has is vacinations and really it does not.

The old protocals set for first shots at 6 weeks and 8 weeks. Newer protocals have said that is too early for a pup. I believe the first inoculation is now at 8 weeks.
And for the record, I do not believe in worming a healthy puppy. There is no reason to put poison in a baby body that is not needed.

I agree... Sierra did not have worms ever. Her puppies did not have worms.. she does not eat contaminated food or dirt and they had a contained environment.. the vet told me to worm Autumn just in case... in one ear out the other.. next time I went in took him a sample.. hmm came up clean.. see no need for it...

Prada has been wormed twice & she just got her FIRST set of shots on Feb. 26th.
It is the worming part I really do not agree with. Unless a pup has worms, I never give them worming medication. I am guessing it is along these lines that UC Davis came up with their new vaccination protocals that also do not want to give pups too young anything in their bodies.
But of course there are always varied opinions on these things :)

Yeah... I don't completely agree with it myself, but by the time I had contacted the breeder on her puppies, they had already been wormed. *sighs* I don't know, I'm not saying I agree with it, but thus far I haven't seen many ill-effects because of it. Have you?
I have a tip, thing what ever you want to call it about worming.. will start another thread..

ok I am originally from Idaho.. a country girl.. We had a dog when I was a kid.. now other then getting her shots I cant remember my dog ever going to the vet... but I was a kid.. But my dog did get worms.. my mom freaked out thought maybe the dog had given them to me or my brother.. my mom is a huge all natural person was a vegetarian for many many years.. wont eat junk food buys all organic foods.. I did not follow her footsteps.. so when my dog got worms she didn't take her to the vet what she did was she gave her egg shells mixed in with can dog food.. and it got rid of the worms.. what she did was after you fried up your eggs in the morning she cleaned the inside.. washed them in the sink with water and removing the membrane that is in there and put them in a bowl to dry.. after the eggs dried out usually a day she crushed them up into a powder.. sand like.. and she gave the dog a teaspoon of this a day mixed in wet food.. and after a week the worms should be gone.. she also gave it me and by brother for a week a teaspoon of eggshells with a pinch of sugar on top and a glass of water.. yum yum. The theory behind it is the egg shells are gritty like sand and will remove any worms in the intestines but will not damage the intestines. So in my other thread when CC had worms and I could not take her to the vet because she was so skittish that is what I gave her for a week.. vary rarely have I ever given any of my pets chemical dewormer.. I usually just give them the eggshell mix.

I absolutely agree with C that no puppy should be dewormed "just because". But, it is common for puppies to become infested from their mothers (something about lactating that passes along "dormant eggs"). That said, everyone should have their dogs (and puppies old enough) on monthly heartworm preventative. In most cases, this monthly tablet "deworms" your dog from most intestinal parasites as well as heartworms. As for the vaccination question... protocols have changed a lot in recent years... most vets advocate first vaccine injection at 8 weeks, and many will space apart the individual vaccines so as not to "overload" the immune system and cause reactions.

I definitely support monthly heartworm meds. I give my dogs Heartguard in the warm summer months when the mosquitos come out. We don't have any during the winter months. Heart worm is a serious thing that can kill your Boxer. Young and old. It is not the same as traditional worms which are fairly easy to diagnose and treat. ::shudder::
