Cropping

OK, after much debate, I have decided to crop Prada's ears (if I can find a proper, experienced Vet to do it). Is this a procedure that's best done sooner than later? I've read up on it & have come across an article that says it should be done at around 7-12 weeks for large breeds & no later than 9 weeks for the small breeds. I guess since the ear cartilage is permanently set at 4 months of age & ears cropped after this age may never properly stand?! I've also gotten a price range of anywhere from $80 to $250. Does this hold true?

I've compiled a list of a few Vets in my area that may or may not do cropping. I e-mailed a few concerning it tonight. I'll be calling around a lot tomorrow. I hope to have some luck. But I live in such a small-town area, I'm not sure if anyone around here is experienced w/it. Does anyone know of any sites that list cropping specialists by state? Actually any good, solid ear cropping sites would be appreciated. I found a few, but a woman's research is never really done. The more opinions & information I read, the better! :)

Yay or nay, people? I won't be showing her, so this is purely cosmetic. I can see both sides of the argument, but I've thought a lot about it & have decided that I would like to have it done. I pretty much looked past it during these past months simply because I didn't think my fiancee would agree to pay for such a procedure. But after finally bringing it up to him, he agreed to do it if I wanted to. And so, here I am... looking to you all for guidance! *haha*

12 weeks is the absolute latest, but I prefer 8-10 weeks. I try to do it by 9 weeks for my own pups. Yes, it is because of the cartilidge. While it is not "set" at 12 weeks, it is forming in the ear and makes cropping a bit more problematic.

I paid $550 to crop Brandi's ears. But he is a pretty expensive vet for this procedure. He is in high demand and does an incredible job. I would say be prepared to pay at least $200.

I would suggest you make a call or send an email to your nearest Boxer Club ... see who they recommend for cropping.  Also, make sure you realize and are "up for" all the aftercare.  I am sure you know that the surgery is not what makes the ears stand, but the weeks or months of dedicated care post op.  I am glad you are doing the research... educate yourself, then decide.  Either cropped or natural, Prada will be lovely!

I'll agree. Botched crop jobs (usually seen in rescue) aren't very pretty. The aftercare is probably why I won't crop - long hours grooming and preparing aren't my thing.

Thank you all for the replies!

I do realize the weeks (or months) of re-taping (and massaging of the ears) will be a lot of work, but I think it would be well-worth it in the end. I did a lot of research on cropping (years, really)... as the breed of dog I've always wanted is a Great Dane - I think they look so magnificent w/their ears cropped - the breed just fascinates me to no end. Unfortunately - "roominess" - is just something I don't have at this time - it wouldn't be the proper place for such a large breed. So I came across the Boxer & haven't looked back since. I'm so looking forward to getting my girl home & being able to come to know the breed first-hand.

All the vets that I've contacted thus far either never did the procedure or stopped doing it. *grumbles* It looks like my girl will remain natural.... we shall see.

The idea on contacting the nearest Boxer Club was a great suggestion. I will definitely try that! Thank you, Sue!!
