1905 family home
Permalink

Hello folks from lovely Portland Oregon!  My family originally settled here from England, several generations ago. I am up here for 4 days to visit with my great aunt whom is about to turn 90 years old. I visited here several times as a young girl and was last up here about 18 years for a family reunion. I decided it was time to come and spend some quality time with my great aunt; just the 2 of us.

It is simply lovely here. Her home was built originally in 1905. They added a large addition in 1923. Everything is original from the fixtures, crown molding and door knobs. I can't even go into detail right now. Her home was not set up for my laptop. So I am at a local library using their computers. What a wonderful option for those traveling like I am.

I adore my aunt. We had a lovely dinner last night at a popular seafood place. Tonight we are going out for steak. Tomorrow morning we will attend mass at her local parish. The church is only 2 blocks away and is incredibly quaint. I plan to take photos of it. Tomorrow we will go out for dinner again and I am on a plane Monday morning to return home. The library is situated on "Antique Row" so you can guess where I will be in 10 more minutes :)

Cheers !!!!

Hey I didnt know you were coming to portland... smile  Welcome to our city... smile I have been in portland since 1992.  We have many old houses here and many many Antique shops.  My own house is not quite that old but was built in 1942.  Sounds like you are pretty busy this trip out.. You will have to come back to explore a little more..  There is many sites just outside Portland you would love like the old senic highway that has views of the gorge and a few spots in portland that you can see the whole city and take it the view there is a great spot up by the zoo for downtown, and also one towards mount hood called rocky butte which is close by me that you have some good views of the river and the mountains.  I could go on and on... smile

I am back !  Far too much to write about. I will be downloading my photos the next few days and hopefully can post a couple of them. The weather held beautifully until this morning. That is why the rain clouds finally arrived. To avoid freeway traffic, my aunt's friend gave me directions through down. It was long but it was worth it.

I went to mass with my aunt. Just a short walk up the street to this lovely gothic style church built about 1923 according to my aunt. She and her family have been members of this parish since the church was built. There was a smaller version prior to that which they also attended mass at. The cherry blossum trees were in full bloom which made for a lovely walk. And everyone seems to have tulips in their yard. They were everywhere and in every color.

Blustorm, my aunt lives in the area called Sellwood. Just before you hit Milwaukee. So basically on the outskirts of Portland. Very very old neighborhood.

Here are a couple of photos. The first is the front of the house. Photos taken from when Aunt Kitty was a young girl show the same front. I think that is amazing !!!

The 2nd photo is her claw foot tub. It is huge, deep and I am enamored. Aunt Kitty thought it was hysterical I was so excited to take a bath in it. 18 years ago I visited and used this tub. It was great!  So I could not wait to use it again. Simple pleasures :)

Your aunts home is great, and I love the bathtub!!

Suddenly, everybody is turning 90!!

In our family, my mom turned 90 in Janurary, my aunt who shares my birthday turned 90 this month, and last weekend, I took my mom to he goodr friend of 69 years...who also turned 90....and these women don't look a day over 70!! LOL
And, they all are with it 'upstairs'.....
It's nice that you could spend some time with your aunt, I'm sure she treasured your visit...
