Okay, I know boxers are VERY smart and so they are easily trainable. I would like to know how many of you have successfully trained your fur kids to walk off leash and how you did it. I know it's possible but would like to know how easily they took to it.
I don't plan on walking her around the neighborhood like this of course, just in the yard.
First and foremost, you'll need OB training. It's fun, plus it creates a wonderful bond between you & your boxer. Boxers become bored very easy, so don't work on one command more than 10 minutes at a time, change to something else. Sometimes they do get alittle stubborn, so you'll have to make training fun. In order to walk off lead, you have to work on the "heel" command and must have a solid recall.."come" All Boxers are different, some take longer than others, but the main thing is, don't give up. Have good sense of humor, give lots of love and attention, and it will happen.
Also keep in mind, that a rescued boxer will need time to adjust. It will need to learn the house rules, learn how to tell you they need to go out to potty, and even if they are house broken, they still may have an accident, because of the new surroundings. They have to learn trust you. Once you have this special bond, nothing will break it.
I can't add much to Vickie's post about training. I compete with Tanner and Zammi in AKC Obedience and Rally. Tanner started OB training with a Puppy Class and continued on through the different levels. Since Zammi was rehomed with me and had never really been trained, I worked with him for 18 months at home before taking him into his first formal Obedience Class. Pilot has already been through 2 Classes, one Obedience and one Rally. It just takes consistency and dedication and lots of positive reinforecment to train any dog. Boxers want to please you so very much and I know that once your Girl has bonded with you and trusts you conpletely, you will have no problems with training. Good Luck
