Ear Cropping help
Permalink

I love the look of the cropped ear.  My boy tango just turned 12 weeks old yesterday.  I took him to a vet that does cropping.  The vet told me that his ears may not stand due to his ears not standing up by themselves enough already.

When you get your boxers ears cropped is this a big factor or is it more in the aftercare.  The vet charges 150 to do the procedure and then there is all the aftercare.

I also went to another vet who stated he like to wait at least 7 months before cropping the ears because they keep growing before that time.

I will post some pictures of Tango as soon as I get them downloaded from the camera and maybe you guys can give me your opinion.

The vet that told me they don't stand up enough by themselves sent me home with a bottle of pet cal supplements and told me to come back in one month to see if they stand up any better.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,...12 weeks is the absolute latest to crop a puppies ears. The vet who told you to wait 7 months, has no idea what they are talking about. Getting your pups ears to stand has a lot to do with the after care, and the toughness of the ear leather. If your pups ears are still rather soft, it may take a while for them to stand. I seen poeple still taping at a year old. So if your not ready for the after care, weeks/ months of taping, cleaning, retaping, and you don't have a "good" ear cropping vet, time is all most out. At this late in the game, I would not to do it. There is nothing worse that a bad crop from a vet that has on idea how to crop a Boxer's ears.

If you still want to crop, talk to your local boxer club, they will help you find a good cropping vet. However, don't wait much longer, or it will be to late. 8-10 weeks is the best time to crop. So 12 weeks is pushing it. But that also depends on your pups ears, & the vet who crops them.

Good Luck..

How do I find out the number to my local boxer club? I never knew there was such a thing. Thanks for the informative post. Supposedly the guy that told me 7 months was supposed to be "very good" at cropping. I have one other vet I know to look into. He charges 200.00. I have seen his work and he does a very nice job.

I don't know if I should wait any longer if I want to get it done. I am ready to put in the work of taping and after care. It's not the end of the world he still looks great and we wouldn't love him any less.

I don't know how close that is to you..but it's a start. I would get on it asap if you plan to crop, time is not on your side.

Thank you I will check out the boxer link. I hope I find something fast. I wouldn't have waited but I thought I had plenty of time with that one vet telling me I have until they are 7 months. Grrr, now I need to rush.

Thank you that was very informative. I will have to keep looking because I haven't been able to find any recommendations yet. There is a vet about 40 minutes away. This may be an option but the drive time won't be fun. I am willing to put in the time and effort I just want one that is going to be reliable and do a good crop.

I don't need a show crop. Is it possible to have a crop look good that is a little shorter like a medium crop?

Does anyone have pics of a boxer with a medium cut? Definetely not a short pit bull cut but something a bit shorter than the show cut.

Just to update we have decided to keep Tango's ears all natural. Thanks for all the help and input!

Being he is already 12 weeks, I think that is a very smart thing to do. There is also a way to tape natural ears to help them lay flat, so he wont have "fly away" ears. I posted a link to taping natural ears in another thread. It's very easy & something I did to help Leo with his "fly away" ears. When he starts losing his baby teeth, around 4 months, his ears may go alittle crazy...!!

Due to his age, I would say this is a wise decision.
The vet that recommended 7 months is NOT a good vet. Stay away from them at all costs. I would not trust them with a stuffed animal if they truly told you that.
