Does anyone in here have experience in giving your boxer supplements? The vet where I was going to have Tango's ears cropped wanted to start Tango on a supplement called Pet Cal. The vet told me it should help get his ears standing up more on their own before he thinks they are ready to be cropped.
The vet also stated the supplement is good for Tango anyway because there is only one chance to get his skeletal structure nice and strong in the first year. I have heard mixed opinions on supplements and wanted to know what you guys think.
Also do you think Science Diet is a good food brand? My vet told me to give Tango pupply large breed formula to start out with.
The Central Indiana Boxer Rescue uses Eagle pack on thier Boxers so that is what I am sticking with for now. I use to have my cats on Iams and was also going to give it to my boxer. My vet recommended it. Then I did a little research and read some scary stuff. So now both will be on the Eagle Pack. I was a litte curiouse about the Science diet tho. I've never heard good or bad about it but it's about the same price as the Eagle Pack. It's all so confusing!!!
According to an orthorpedic specialist, you need to only give a good dog food. Do not supplement. The body will produce what it needs. You can do more harm than good by supplementing.

I have heard that the supplement will increase growth faster than normal and could cause joint problems. The vet wanted me to put Tango on the supplement and stated it will help fight hip and joint problems. I only took his reccommendation. I wish I could her more personal experiences with this before we decide to take him off of the supplement.
A healthy puppy, on a good quality dog food has absolutely no need for a supplement. We never advise clients to give their puppies vitamins or other supplements, unless there is a specific need. As for a supplement, helping to keep the joints healthy while your puppy grows... I am sorry, I don't know your vet, but it sounds like a load of BS to me. Supplementing can actually cause overgrowth or too rapid of growth, giving a lifetime of skeletal problems. IS this the same vet who told you to wait until 7 months to crop your dog's ears? Again, I don't know your vet, but I personally would run away very quickly!

This was my first time going to this vet. He was the one that was going to do the crop but suggested we put him on the supplement for a month to see how his ears do at that time.
