CGC and TDI Testing
Permalink

Hi Everyone!!

A few weeks ago I enrolled Cassius into a class that will teach him all he needs to know for his CGC test, and at the end of the class they will actually bring in an evaluator and test all the dogs in the class. I guess they will include a few of the TDI components as well. My mom is a nurse and works at a nursing home and there is nothing more I would like to do than to be able to take Cassius in there a few times a month.

I know that many of you have been through this with your Boxer babies, and I was looking for some advice. The biggest "rub" or tease that Cassius has is kids....he absolutley loves them!!! He gets VERY excited and he just can't sit still when he sees them. Since kids are used in the testing, I'm a little worried he may not pass due to his exuberence around them.

Being that I have no kids, I was wondering if any of you have any advice or tricks that you have used to get your Boxers to calm down a bit. My trainer said it worried her, because he gets so excited that he can come across to the kids, or their parents, that he's being aggressive when all he really wants to do is play.....hmmhmmhmm

I have a few more weeks before he gets tested, so any suggestions you may have would be great!!!

Thanks!

Becky

First of all, Cassius is very young and controlable calmness in Boxers comes with age.
I'll will be working toward Pilots CGC this fall and I would not expect him to be able to contain himself around children yet...... he's too much of an excitable puppy.
I would be waiting until he is 2 y.o. to work toward a TDI with success in all situations. JMO

Beverly,

Cassius is still young, he's actually almost 13 months....I haven't changed my signature in quite some time weirdface...

I guess since he does very well in all the other situations I was hoping he would perform well around kids. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that it clicks.

Thanks!

13 months old is still young :)
They did not use children when I had my dogs tested for CGC. Just an adult and of course another dog. At least you can talk to your dog during CGC testing. For CD work, you must be mum :)

CD??? Sounds tough!!

I'll take the CGC for now. From what I understand from my trainer there will be kids at the testing. She brought one in last week to see how the dogs would react and Cassius failed miserably, especially when he was holding a tennis ball, talk about too many distractions!!! She's exposing our dogs to many different types of situations, sounds, smells and so on, which has been great for Cassius. A lot of what she is doing may not be a part of the test but it's still pushing his ADHD threshold.....lol

Sounds like Cassius is just being a Boxer and I need to be more patient with him.....

Thanks so much for your input!
