Daisy's first meeting with her trainer
Permalink

Well we had our first meeting with the trainer yesterday.  We were there 1hr 45 min.  Daisy did sort of good.  The trainer (Patty) said that she will be #1 on sitting in the class.  She loved the liver treats Patty was giving her so she listened pretty well. She did have an accident (peed) how embaressing!  Then we thought she had to go poop later so I took her outside to the appropiate area and she wouldn't go.  I don't know if it's because she was on the leash or not.  We did have a good session as far as my learning went.  I'm am having a little problem remembering to do the clicker but Daisy likes the name game and the watch game and does pretty good.
We worked on her crate training.  I guess the crate I have for her is too big.  I got the one where she'd grow into it and I even used the divider but she hates it.  Patty gave me a much smaller plastic covered one (mine is open grate kind)and she did great.  She slept all night in it with the door closed.  She cried and barked for about 1 -2 minutes.  I put it right next to the bed and put my hand in the front and she settled down nicely.  I did get up and let her out to go potty (on the leash) around 4am and put her back in the crate and she whimpered once and laid right down and went back to sleep!  YEAH DAISY!!! I was very proud.
Now we just have to get her past biting ankles and barking.  Patty said she is very excitable (like I didn't know - haha )  when she gets playing so we have to keep an eye on that.  Hopefully all will go better on her first puppy class on Monday but Patty said don't be surprised if it doesn't with all the puppies there.  She said the first day is always a little distracting for the puppies because all they want to do is play.  They do get 15 minutes before and after class to free play.  I am looking forward to it.
Just thought I'd let you all know how she did.  She did snap and growl at my niece (11yrs) and my son - in - law when they tried to correct her.  Patty said it would probally get worse before it gets better because she will try harder to get her way, so I am hoping that was all that was.
Let you know more after Monday!  Wish us luck!
Marian

Good going! Just remember, she is not a mean puppy. She is only a baby with sharp teeth. And in the pack, her behavior is how they fight for alpha status. You simply have to be firm but loving and she will figure it out. Boxers really want your approval so will do what they can to make you happy.

Her brother is a pistol. Toby is a sweet puppy but of course also gets a bit wild with the biting. I will yell OUCH! while keeping my hand right there. Toby will immediately stop and look at me. I meet his gaze steady. He will then lick my hand while still looking at me. I tell him GOOD BOY. He gets happy and does it all over again. He will get it figured out.

LOL---he is a baby. I can deal with it :)

Good morning! Thanks Christina! She did real good yesterday all day. No problem what so ever in the small crate. I even put her in it to run to the store real quick and no crying when we left and no crying when we got home. Yeah! This morning however is a totally different day. Wasn't interested in her breakfast - just wanted the treats so I am sure she will be hungry by lunch because I picked up her food after 15 minutes. She was also bad on her walk and would not stop pulling. We did a lot of stopping and waiting until she quit pulling. I don't know who is more tired her or I? haha! She is taking her nap now.
The treats that Patty gave me to give her are giving her loose stools? Is that normal? I figure it is that. I am going to alternate her dry kibble with the treats. We don't want a fat baby although I think they burn it all off with thier engery. She was doing her boxer burns in the backyard after her walk this morn before she took her nap. I wish I had some of that energy! At the very least I should loose a few pounds with all the walking! haha!
It is hard not to pull your hand away when she is biting. My niece and nephew have a hard time with that. She does like the wet wash cloth in the freezer to chew on though so when they are here I usually let them give her that instead of thier hands to chew on and she stops.
Thanks again for the encouragment!

I was just giving Daisy her heartworm stuff and I remembered I wanted to ask - The trainer said that she only gives her heartworm medicine every 45 days as it lasts that long - instead of every 30 days. Any comments?

It will get worse before it gets better..............LOL
I think that Boys are easier all the way around; bitches want to rule and can be very stubborn about giving it up.
The most important thing to remember is that they are puppies and will learn with firm, but loving consistence.
You're doing just great!!!

Heartworm meds are meant to be given every 30 days (once per month).  There is a 12 day window to allow for forgetting to give it on the correct day, but any longer than that 12 day window and you are possible exposing your dog to getting heartworm.  I usually give HW on the 1st day of the month, but know I really can do it at any time in that first week.  Does that help?

I also give my boys HW meds every 30 days, same day of the month (28)...I have reminders sent via e-mail ..plus it's marked on the calendar. I have never gone over 30 days. To me, it's very important.

thats kinda what I thought too. I was late I think twice by a day ot two with Bacci. I never gave it to her in the winter though as there are no mosquitos. I gave it to her starting in May thru Oct-Nov. Of course this all depended on the weather and how warm it was.
Thanks for the input everyone!
