I live in Bergen County NJ, and it's been quite cold outside. So I bought Voodoo a coat for the really cold days, and boots for when it snows and there is ice on the road.
She tolerates the coat, but clearly feels uncomfortable in it as she won't play with her friends when wearing it. I thought maybe it was a bit restrictive so I bought her a slightler larger blanket/coat - same reaction. Now I have to wonder, if it makes her miserable - then perhaps she would be better off without it? On the other hand she really doesn't have all that much of a natural coat. Would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.
The boots are an entirely different story - she hates them. But I force these as the salt has really hurt her feet in the past. Also I know most dogs don't like boots - but OMG she is such a drama queen about them!
So I guess my main question is - am I being too overprotective by making her wear a coat when the weather is really brutal? Should I just rely on her natural coat even when it's a real feel of 8 degrees?
We live in Colorado. When the Temps are below freezing and the Boys will be outside for longer than a Potty break, they wear their coats. It sometimes does take a bit for them to get used to them. I start out by taking them for a walk the first time the coat is put on. They just don't seem to have a problem after that. They love their walks! Never used boots, but do limit outside time. Hope you have better luck. What type of coat are you using?

I've gotten her three coats. The first is water proof with a fleece lining - she doesn't really like it so I limit that to only when it's raining/snowing out. It may be a bit tight around her chest - so probably more restrictive.
The second is like a blanket, but a coat - it's basically identical to my horse's blankets, but smaller. She tolerates that one a bit better - it probably offers her better movement.
The third looked good in the catalogue, but doesn't appear to offer much warmth so I haven't even tried it.
Best advice is to have her wear her coats a bit in the house as well as outside. Get her used to it. I dress my dogs up all the time with silly outfits. LOL--trust me, if I can do it, your girl can wear her comfy coat :)
