You need to work closely with your vet on this one. She probably had signs you missed since you have no experience with a litter. It takes days for the infection to burst to such an extreme measure.

Right now momma's reserves are low. She has given all she has to whelp and nurse those pups. She is very prone to infection and possible death. So work closely with your vet until momma is 100% healed up. Keep her warm and clean. Keep the pups warm and clean. And keep a 24/7 vigilance on them all.

These are by far not the first puppies I have ever had. I am working very close with both of my vets at this point. I do relize how serious this is. The puppies are doing great! Mom is alot better she is eating and drinking and even starting to show signs of wanting to play.The pupsarebeing bottle fedevery 2 hours and are in the house with us so some one is checking on them every little bit. Giving meds and taking care of her and the babies is not a problem I just thought maybe some one might have an idea on what to use to get rid of the odor on Mom. The Puppies all have good homes when they are ready to leave Mom. Their new families see them almost daily. I know that all dogs should be tested and all of that before breeding. This was an accidental breeding and I could not stand the idea of moom and babies being put down She is a wonderful loving pet. I will see to it that she is NEVER bred again.All of my dogs are spayed and neutered except Bojax and he was given to me as an adult and just never got fixed but he is never allowed to roam around. He is a home boy LOL!!!Rest assured that I will take VERY GOOD care of them all.

Awww you did not say you have bred lots of litters. I took this as you took in a Rescue and were asking for help with an unfamiliar situation.

1 word of advice: People should not be coming to see these puppies daily. That is bad for momma. You said she was a dumped stray. The last thing she needs is a bunch of strangers being around her daily. Even a settled bitch in her own home will often have problems with strangers around her and her new babies. It is not an ideal thing to do.. And for the health of the pups as well as her, all the unneccessary bacteria they are introducing into her whelp area is dangerous. As you have seen, she is not in the peak of health.

Please limit any and all activity around her and her puppies. The stress will make her health even worse that it presently is.

Missunderstanding again LOL!! I don't breed boxers but I use to raise Beagles. I stoped when everyone started to breed puggles I did not like what they were doing to the breed. I took this one in because I knew she was a wonderful dog and if I hadn't they were going to put her down while she was preg. What can I say I have a soft heart.
You are right I will limit activity Everyone is just excited about getting the puppies a good home. (She does like the attention tho) She is doing extremly well. Took her back to the vet. today for a check up and he could not beleive how well it is healing.She is starting to but some weight back on and still takes GOOD care of the babies. I will post pictures tomarrow as soon as I empty my camera it is full of pictures from the wreck. The smell on her is ALOT better but I beleive my carpet will have to go!!

The smell is form the infection. Until the infection is under control there is not a lot you can do about the smell on her. Are you hot compressing the affected nipple to help alleviate discomfort and promote healing by getting blood flowing into the area? It is a good idea if you are not already doing so. Increased blood flow to the area helps more white blood cells and antibiotics get directly to the infection site and they will work better, faster to clear the infection.

As for getting rid of the smell on carpets, furniture, clothing etc. I would try the old standby skunk smell beater... 1 pint of hydrogen peroxide, 1 box of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of dish soap... mix well, apply, let sit for 10-20 minutes then wipe away and rinse. Of course you can not use this on momma right now because of the open wound, but I will bet it will improve the smell of furniture and carpetting she's been laying on.

Thank you I will try This mix. The puppies are in a plastic pool lined with newspaper and fleece blankets so that is easy to keep clean but Jewel (Momma) lays on the floor when she does not want to be bothered and it is really starting too smell.

Just a quik update,,,Took Jewel and babies to the vet yesterday. She is doing great they cleaned it and put a drain tube in It looks so much better and the smell is gone. She has gain 5 lbs and the puppies are thriving. I am still bottle feeding around the clock but they are eating puppy food mixed with milk (puppy milk) once a day for now to see how they do on it. They sure do like it. The vet said he is amazed at how well they are all doing.
