Hi Everyone, A breeder recently told me my female boxer, "Moxie", has flying ears and that it is a fault in the show ring. Can someone show me a picture of each? When is it too late to use massage for correcting these problems? She is one year old. Thanks!
"proper lay of Cropped ears "Flying Nun" ears uncropped ears
Do you see the difference in these illustrations? To answer you question abut massage or taping of uncropped ears to foster the "proper" ear lay... it must begin between 8 and 12 weeks of age (same age as cropping would occur), continuing through puppyhood until the desired result occurs. The point of the massaging or taping is to keep the ears in the appropriate orientation while the ear cartilage is developing. This will train the cartilage to hold the ear in that position. Once the cartilage is set, there is nothing to be done. So enjoy your "flying nun"... many of us here have them!!

Thanks Sue, Thank you so much for the illustrations. One more question are flying ears and rose ears the same thing. If not which does Moxie have and could you show an illustration? I love her ears, I think they are cute......... Kathryn
I have never heard of Rose Ears. Where are you getting this term?
Flying nun ears are not a fault. They are simply not in keeping with the breed standard as it pertains to proper lay of ear on uncropped Boxers. Inproper ear lay distracts from the entire face and expression just as poorly set cropped ears would.

The only time I've heard the term "rose ears" is in conection with greyhound ears. When coiled in a circle, a greyhound's ears are supposed to resemble a rose.

No I am not located in Australia, just did a search on Boxer ears and that is one of the sites that came up. I did read something else about rose ears and printed it off but can't find where I copied it from, it defined rose ears as: Rose ear': folding inwards back, upper or front inner edge curving outwards and backwards, showing part of inside of burr. I can't quite imagine the description.
Okay, then it is simply a different country trying to explain and using terms more local to their dialect. Here in the US, I have never heard that term describing Boxer ears :)
LOL--and I am pretty certain "flying nun" ears would be an American created term. Seeing how the Flying Nun was a created American show. Loved Sally Field !!

I'm in total agreement with you, they are all adorable, the ears give them so much character. Thank you for the website, I enjoyed looking at all the eardo's! My favorite: http://euro-boxer.com/other/ears/ears_013.jpg
Zammi definitely has Sonny Ears. Right ear is perfect in position and size and Left ear flies a bit. I did get him at 18 months old, so they were already set. You can tape ears on Pups to achieve the proper set for natural ear. My Pilot's two litter mates who are being shown have natural ears. His littermate, Dusty Road's Run Don't Walk (Miley), finished her CH this weekend at the Garden City Kennel Club shows in Kansas.
