My Boxer Keeps Trowing Up Her Food
Permalink

I have been given a 3 year old female boxer from a breeder friend of mine.  She is an awesome dog, very gentle, create and house broke, and very loving.  We got some of her food from my friend to move her over to a different food and things were ok for a day or so and now she will eat, play, and act fine and anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours she will throw up her meal.  Any ideas??  Thanks in advance!!

Why are you changing her food?
You typically do not want to do that unless they are either having issues or it is a poor quality food.

Does she have another health issue?

no health issues that we were aware of, we are changing her food becuase the food the breeder was using is not avalible in my area.  She is also eating the green grass when let out as fast as it is growing it seems.  Thanks for the reply.

Hi & welcome to the board. Sorry your girl is having problems. As for changing her food, are you doing it slowly, over a 7 to 10 day time period.?? Changing all of a sudden can cause tummy upsets... What are you feeding her.?? The new food may not agree with her. How long have you had her.??

If you can give us more info, we might be able to help....!

I have had her about 3 weeks, we moved her about half and half for about a week from the breeder food over to science diet.  Any suggestions would be a great help thanks.

Chewing grass is a sign of wanting to throw up. Upset tummy. Changing her food and her home sounds like it was just too much for the poor dear. Make sure she has plenty of fluids and perhaps give her a Pepcid-AC between meals on an empty stomach.

It sounds as if the Science Diet is not setting well on her stomach. The desperation to eat grass whenever she is outside is a good indicator that her tummy is not happy. I would completely stop feeding her for a 24 hour period, then give her a very bland diet for a couple of days (boiled hamburger, chicken, rice, cottage cheese, etc) then gradually start giving her kibble but of something other than the Science Diet. Science Diet is not one of the best foods available and it sounds as if it is just not going to work for this girl. I would suggest some higher grade food, like California Natural, Chicken Soup for Dog Lovers, Canidae, Solid Gold Wolf King, Canine Caviar. These are all higher end foods, most available nationwide. You may have to do a bit of searching until you find the food that works best for your girl. I would suggest you start off with a smaller bag, and try it for at least a couple of weeks to see how she does on it. Signs that her tummy is happy... no gurgling tummy, minimal grass chomping, minimal nasty gas, firm stools.

thanks so much for all the advice, I agree that it could be the stress of moving and diet change. We will do a 24 hour fast and then go easy this week end and I will pick up a suggested food monday in Tulsa.  Should I start her off with small portions and then work up to about a cup 2 times a day?

Yes, start off the new kibble slowly, mixed with some of the bland diet... gradually up to the recommended amount per day (split into 2 meals).

Thanks to all who have helped, we have got the fasting out of the way and things where GOOD!  I have talked to the wife and we were wondering if a rice and boiled hamburger is a good diet to stay with, and maybe a vitamin to go with it?

Roxxi, my boxer/pit mix, personally loves boiled chicken and rice added in with a little of her dog food every once in awhile =]

We would love to see pictures of your little lady! =D

We have been working with my boys tummy upset from time to time as well.  He certainly LOVES the boiled meat and rice diet.  I also add about two tbs. of canned pumpkin to that recipe and a little plain yogurt/ or even better probiotic yogurt.  He likes it and it seems to really help.

Good luck on your journey with kibbles :)  We started on California Natural & he became intolerable to that so we switched to EVO red meat--was also good for a while.  Now we are on Wellness Allergy which has limited ingredients and he seems to be handling it VERY well.  Hope this helps!

Patricia & Frazier aww

No, that is not a good diet to stick to. Actually, kibble gives your dog some valuable nutrition you will be hard pressed to create with home cooked meals. That is why Susan suggested slowly putting her onto a good quality kibble. What I feed is Pro Plan. My dogs love it and they look good.

I second the Pro Plan. I've been feeding it for a long time and mine are doing great on it also.

Thanks again for all the help.  I noticed that Pro Plan comes in a sensitive stomach blend, might be the ticket here.  We will go with a mix of rice and chicken for a week adding more Pro Plan day by day.  I will keep you posted.  Oh, BTW, the Friday fasting went well, and 2 feedings today of rice and chicken have stayed down.
