Pet over population has been a hot button issue in our county, the idea of a mandatory spay and neuter law is a highly debated topic amongst many people. It's also been fought by Californians statewide.
Several counties in California have already imposed a mandatory spay and neuter law, in fact Kern County will soon decide on whether or not to impose one here. But in many of those counties, people are fighting back. The County of Los Angeles is now tied up in a law suit with those who are against it. During a city meeting this Monday., community members spoke against mandatory laws but offered solutions.
According to research done by a city of Bakersfield analyst, more that 18,000 animals were euthanized 2007, over 5,000 of those were in Bakersfield. So the city decided to fall in line with the county on considering a mandatory spay neuter law, but it's not being well received by all. Joan Payton of the Bakersfield Obedience Training Club, says "We are pro-spay and neuter we are anti-mandatory."
