Training a Boxer (In general)

Well here we go, In my first thread in the Intro section I told you all I would be your worst nightmare and here goes. I cant stand "not knowing" in general so Im feverishly trying to learn as much as i can.

Tango is 10 weeks old. I have given him a week to settle with the family and I want to start working with him this weekend. As I mentioned in the other thread, I have been training working bird dogs (labs) for years and swear by the "Water Dog" method. I have read the book umpteen zillion times and just picked it back up again last monday to re-read. It seems as though the teqniques for basic K9 obedience would apply to any breed but I wanted to get you guys opinion...

we are currently working on the house training (he is almost there) with possitive reinforcement and repetition. So far it is working. THis weekend I want to start him on Sit, Stay, Come, and obviously, "NO". According to my experince with Water dog, I am about 3 weeks behind on training. 8 weeks old is when I like to start them, but as smart and eager as this breed seemsto be, I dont think I will have issues.

All that to say, Can I use the Waterdog method to train my Boxer, and if you dont reccomend this, are there any other comprehensive books on training boxers?

I despise Obedience Training schools from past bad experiences, and I want to train him myself to ensure his disposition remains wonderful during the training period.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Okay, I will plead ignorance on the "Water Dog" method of Training. Which book are you using, Wolters or Mike Gould's?

I have started working with my Puppies from the day I have gotten them, which is usually around 9-12 weeks of age.
Years ago training was so very different than it is now. I use positive reinforcement with all of my Boys. This seems to work extremely well with my Boxers with a little bit of NILIF Training. Good Luck.

I use Richard Wolters Book. its a proven method that focuses on instilling the basics into a pup at the right physiological age of 8-16 weeks. Scientific study has proven (according to Wolters) that by 8 weeks, a pup is the most able to learning the fundamentals (No, Sit, Stay, Come, Heel) that are the basis for everything else you would ever train a dog.

I was skeptical at first, but after multiple successes, I am a believer. I also think Tango, being the most intelligent pup I have seen to date, would easily slide into learning some things.

Again,

Thanks for your help! Ill take ANY advice I can get!

Hi....
Welcome...
I'm not familiar with Water Dog method...
I've had boxers for 16 years now, we are on our 3rd and 4th boxer...
I love the book Boxers For Dummies....gave us a lot of training info on the breed, and how to handle them....that , and OB training....

Good luck to you.....boxers are a fantastic breed.....would never be with out one....smile

The interesting part of training methods based on books is that the Boxer never read those books. The best proven method for training a Boxer is with positive reinforcement, realistic expectations and a firm sense of boundaries.

I sense of humor never hurt either :)
