Breeder question
Permalink

Hey guys!  I know I haven't been on for awhile, but things have been crazy.  I'll update soon.  But I have a question.  On another board I check a member wanted to know if anyone knew anything about a breeder in N.J. and since she got no reply I thought I would check here and relay back to her if anyone knew any info. She was told that it's probably a BYB since she found her in the paper, but that wasn't good enough she want's to know if anyone has heard of her.  Here is her post:

Just wondering if any breeders or showers here know the name Deborah Hennessy???? I found her in our local paper and am planning to go see a pup she has available. The Grandfather to the pup we are going to see is or was "Grand Marshall". Just doing my homework......in case we decide to purchase the pup.

I have never heard of her. However, if a breeder has to grab a Champion name way back in their pedigree to brag on, then I would say to BEWARE. The strength of a breeder in the bitch they breed and only 2nd comes the stud dog. If this breeder cannot even brag on the mom of the litter, then they must not be very impressed with their own dog(s).

Yes, I know Grand Marshall. But unless this is his owner/breeder bragging on his inclusion in the pedigree, then it does not matter. It is nothing more than name dropping :)

For those that have known me over the years, you know I speak about my own Boxers. I love them, am proud of them, and would never part from them. But what I never brag about is their own pedigrees of other breeders' dogs behind them. Believe me, there are some wonderful dogs in those pedigrees. And for the most part, I have either seen or spent time with many of those very dogs. However those other breeder's incredible dogs are not my own and therefore I leave the credit for them up to their owners/breeders. I do not name drop. I am proud <g>, but I do not name drop in an effort to make the public think better of my dogs.

I let the PawPrint Boxers stand on their own merits ;)

Mind you all, being proud of the parents and grandparents of a dog is great. You should be proud of the family you share. But they should never be used as a selling point to sell puppies from.

If you don't mind can I copy and paste your response? I think it's a great explanation! Thanks

What you should tell your friend to do is ask about both parents. Since this breeder wants to brag on conformation titles, ask her what titles the parents have. Ask her specifically what health testing has been done on each parent and ask to see those hard copy results before giving any $$. Ask their involvement in the breed beyond just breeding and selling puppies.

Believe me, a good breeder will welcome the opportunity to brag on the Boxers they are breeding!

I agree totally C, just trying to educate so she doesn't end up being taken for a ride. She is a newer member and I don't know her very well, but thought your post could help lurkers too. I'm still surprised at how many people just don't get it about BYB's and puppy mills

Hello everyone,
While I knew it would be hard to say goodbye to Cassius, I didn't expect it to hurt this badly for this long. No other pup can ever replace him, but after much thought & soul-searching, we've decided that when the time comes, which won't be until after Jack joins Cassius at the Bridge, we want another Boxer puppy, & we'd like to get a white one. Part of it is because, puppy or adult, they're just so darn CUTE, but a big part is that the ones that I've met on the Boxer board have just completely captured my heart. My question is about the cost of a white. I'm researching breeders, since Cassius' kennel is no longer breeding, & Jack came to us as a stray, & the ones who mention price state that the cost for a white is about 1/3 that of their other pet quality pups. While I'm all for saving money, I'm worried that while the parents of these pups are listed as champions & the websites have photes of them winning points, that perhaps these breeders aren't what they seem. Or am I just being overly cautious?

There are several Boxers in our neighborhood, & it's so obvious that most of them are from BYB's, & I don't want to take a chance on ending up with an ill-bred pup. So, after all that, lol my actual question is - is it usual to 'discount' the white pups in a litter? Thanks for you help!

Only members of the American Boxer Club, or a member of their local Boxer club, are not supposed to sell white pups for the same price as a colored pup. They are to be sold only for the amount of vet costs associated with that particular puppy. Some folks have run for the hills as they attempt to rationalize $1000 pups that only saw a vet for shots, tails and dew claws. Up until a couple of years ago, ABC members placed white pups for no $$.

My first white pup was Moose. I gave him to a good friend whom was also a member of my Boxer club. I had no problem following the ABC code of ethics about such things. Now, I will say that I support a white pup being the same price as a colored pet pup. They are still out of the same litter and are raised just as lovingly. However as the ABC COE stands, I completely abide by them. My main interest is finding a fabulous home for the occasional white pup.

I hope you do not have a reason to look for that next pup anytime soon. But when the time arises, simply look for a breeder you are comfortable with and whom does not appear to simply be giving you a sales pitch on how incredible they are and their dogs are. You should be able to make up your own mind on those counts :)

Thanks for the information Christina. Jack is nearly 9 but except for some gray on his face you'd never know it & the vet recently gave him a clean bill of health, so I'm hoping our new puppy days won't be for a long time either.

They only examine specific costs related to the amount of puppies for sale. Some people have been running the hills, as they tried to straighten out the pups $ 1000, only to see a shot of veterinary..

Hello. I thought I answered this but did I ??? It probably would have been a private message since I don't typically like to discuss real names in public.
