Brandi's heart is OFA !!

I took Brandi for her first Cardiology visit today. This is one of the many tests to make sure she is healthy and possibly able to be bred in the future. Penny's visit went perfect. She is murmur free and rubber stamped in great health !!

What was sad was another patient. These people came out of the exam room in tears. They were holding a 3 month old adorable Rottweiler puppy. He was diagnosed with SAS. The woman was completely distraught. He has no symptoms yet, but their normal vet caught the abnormality and referred them to the Cardiology office.  Such a sweet face he has :(

WTG Brandi

Christina, I just read, on your website, about Brandi & the bee...how scary, good thing you was able to catch it in time. It pays to be very watchful over your dogs every minute you can. So glad she is ok...:)

Leo was stung by a wasp last summer, I was right there when he stepped on it. I thought he was going to be ok without any reaction, but the next morning he had whelps all over him, face was swollen, so off to the vet we go.

My boys are always supervised when they are outside.

After watching the poor Rottie owners with their bad news, I was extra relieved to get Brandi's good news. You just never know with this breed!

SAS is endemic in Rotts, especially with the huge surge in popularity they have had. I met an Irish Setter owner a few days ago and she said that she was glad Setters are so much less popular now, as that means more of them have been responsibly bred. I even know a responsible Rott breeder that kept a pup for show that turned out to be SAS.

It is good to see Brandi has passed her first health test though. I hope all the other results will be as good.

I did not know. But I have no doubt they are very much overbred and most breeders are not very responsible ones. Just like Boxers :(

Go to www.offa.org .  For kicks, put in Delilah's name, Pawprint's Seduction. You will see several testing confirmation #'s show up. Orthopedic Foundation is a tool for dog owners to use towards health testing.

SAS is Subaortic Valvular Stenosis. You can read about it in Boxers here: http://americanboxerclub.org/genetic_diseases.html .

Brandi's cardiologist visit and clearance for SAS allows her to have her first registered health test submitted. I sent the paperwork to OFA yesterday :)

And I will also add if a breeder says their dogs are OFA, look their registered names up on the site. A few weeks ago, I was in the grocery store, and I saw a sign for Golden puppies. Not something I usually pay much attention to, but this time the person claimed they were OFA and of champion stock. So I called, thinking something was fishy. No respectable breeder has to advertise in a grocery store. I got the registered names of the dogs, and looked them up. They weren't on the site.

Very good point. And if the breeder claims they did do the health testing but only kept the records for their own info and never sent them in, that is usually a red flag. The expensive part of testing is the test itself. Registering the results with OFA is pretty cheap :)
